What's a Life Coach and Why Do We All Need One?
Sep 12, 2023I’m a practicing yogi at heart. One of the most aligned times in my life was when I was completing yoga teacher training and learning the principles of yoga. The idea of union of body and mind was so enticing to me. I loved the way my body felt and the states of alignment I could access on my mat- physically and emotionally. As much as I practiced and as much as I believed in the self actualization and peace I knew was possible through yoga, I could not seem to bring the practice very far off my mat- even with breath work, chanting, and meditation. :// Fast forward many years and books and retreats later, my introduction to coaching was the first time I could see a way to bring the freedom of yogic values off the mat and into my life.
‘Yoga sheds light on the dark spaces of the body. Coaching sheds light on the dark spaces of the mind.’
There was something about the practicality of the coaching model that deeply resonated with me. It was so simple yet completely mind blowing to realize that our thoughts create our feelings. And our actions and results are really only as elevated as our thought-feeling combination. Well no wonder!
A coach helps you peel back the layers of the mind that keep you stuck in the same quagmire of emotions and lackluster results most of us live with our whole life. A coach shows you the things you cannot see, holds you accountable, and guides you to rediscover the wisdom that lies within. A coach helps you reclaim trust in yourself and empowers you with tools to do the work.
We have so much untapped capacity as human beings.
Years before I learned of life coaching, I had a coach for Ironman training. We had a relationship as any good coach and client do. She knew me as more than just an athlete but also as a human being. She understood my life and my struggles and saw capability in me before I saw it in myself. I knew she had my back even when she had to tell me to get my shit together. I trusted her. I knew if I carried out the plan as she laid it out, I would be an Ironman. I was responsible for the work and the drive and the desire, but she was responsible for helping me believe when I didn’t know how. When I was broken in a puddle of tears, she reminded me of my capacity and what my body already knew. I never doubted I would be an Ironman. But the real magic of the experience was the person I became on the journey to crossing that line.
This life is arguably the most important race we’ll ever run. It makes sense to train to become the most elevated version of ourselves possible, but most of us never do. Training for anything has its challenges. It’s not without struggle and effort and pain, and I’m guessing most of us are already met with struggle and effort and pain on a daily basis. The question then becomes do you want the struggle of evolution or the struggle of staying the same? I know what I’m going to pick! A life of challenge and growth and possibiiity will always win in my book.
